Among the clearest signs of autumn are the different shapes and colors of leaves that fall to the ground at that time of year. You’ve probably heard the crisp crackling sounds of leaves beneath your feet when exploring gardens and parks. Ever wonder how they magically transform from leafy greens to every color on the rainbow – mustard yellow, deep purple, warm orangey red, soft pink, and tones of golden brown? So, before winter sneaks up on us, trees intelligently conserve energy by stopping the food-making process. You can do a simple science experiment to prove it for yourself. Next, pour in enough rubbing alcohol to completely soak all the leaves and give them a gentle swirl. After 24 hours, the leaves’ hidden colors will emerge in all their glory on the paper towel strips. It’s not surprising that many cultures mark the autumn season with memorable celebrations such as Diwali in India, the Moon Festival in East Asia, and All Saints’ Day, Thanksgiving, and Halloween in the West. The festive enjoyment of these times symbolizes the harvest, abundance, and renewal, just like turning over a new leaf.

Despite having different qualities, all leaves fall into two main categories: simple and compound. Sorting leaves is a great activity for testing your problem-solving skills. The most fun part is finding perfect, flawless, bright leaves, and this in itself can be like a treasure hunt. A nature crown might even be the missing item that completes your Halloween costume. You can use small rocks, pinecones, twigs and even flowers to make it unique. Autumn fun is for everyone. Regardless of your age, you can discover the wonders of nature by exploring and asking questions.
