Dr. Shabnam Islam, a pioneering first-generation Bangladeshi-American, wears many hats in her remarkable career. She is not only a vegan broadcast journalist and public TV host, but also a distinguished professor of kinesiology and a clinical exercise physiologist. “I’ve been an educator for the last 10 years in the health sciences, and I’ve been able to use evidence-based practices to really determine how to improve performance through all ages by using plant-based nutrition.” As the spokesperson for Vkind, Dr. Islam describes how Vkind aims to promote veganism by bringing vegan businesses and professionals together as a network in the United States. Vkind is an online resource website and mobile listing app that produced the show titled, Peeled. Versatile Dr. Islam was also the host of Peeled, created by Vkind, which was America’s first all-vegan cast cooking competition show. “Peeled was the first of its kind, a fully vegan cooking competition show that was vegan from its cast to crew to even craft services. And it gave us an opportunity to collaborate with talent from all over the country to really expose what can be done with plants.” Dr. Islam elaborates that Vkind is an app and website that unites purpose-driven businesses and consumers to grow the veg economy. “Our goal is to really allow for communities to be touched and reached by plant-based nutrition, to know that it’s easily accessible, it is affordable, and it can be utterly life-changing.” “The research continuously shows that increased mortality and morbidity, more death and disease is associated with the consumption of animal with meat and dairy products. If you really care about yourself and you really care about your love, your loved ones, if you really care about the planet, you cannot continue to take part in the destruction of the planet by consuming animals.”
