In Part 1 of this three-part series on Kevin Mohatt’s near-death experience, the Arizona real estate agent and lifelong ice hockey player shares how a blockage in a major heart artery caused a widowmaker heart attack and cardiac arrest, during which he describes watching his own resuscitation from above. On Valentine’s Day 2022, Kevin was playing pickup ice hockey with a group of young men when he began to feel poorly and decided to go home, shower, and sleep it off. At an intersection across the street from his home, he stopped at a yellow light and suffered a widowmaker heart attack. His heart and breathing stopped, and his body slumped across the console and put the car into park.
A woman named Angel, waiting behind him, eventually walked up and found him purple and not breathing. She flagged down a man who helped pull Kevin onto the street. Angel began cardiopulmonary resuscitation [CPR] while the man called 911 [emergency services]. Kevin says the call was initially reported as a motorist in distress and was not treated as a high priority. The fire station across the street was conducting training, so an engine and ambulance were dispatched from another part of town. Angel and two police officers performed hundreds of chest compressions. When the nearby station learned that Kevin’s heart had stopped, it sent its engine, which arrived alongside the other station’s ambulance more than 10 minutes after the initial call.
Kevin was in ventricular fibrillation, a dangerous heart rhythm in which the heart quivers instead of pumping blood effectively. He was rushed to a cardiac catheterization laboratory, where doctors removed a major blood clot from an artery supplying his heart. Doctors feared brain damage from a lack of oxygen and kept him sedated to let his brain rest. He woke about two days later and, despite still feeling weak and battered, walked out of the hospital just five days after his cardiac arrest.
A week after his cardiac arrest, Kevin’s wife was driving him home from a cardiology appointment. He was wearing a medical vest that could deliver a shock if his heart developed a dangerous rhythm. Back at the same intersection where his heart had stopped, Kevin felt a sense of déjà vu. Looking at the base of a light pole, he experienced an electric chill. He initially thought the vest was activating, then realized it was not. He spotted the fire station across the street and wondered whether its crew had helped save him. He decided to visit, hoping to thank his rescuers or find out who they were. The paramedic who answered the door recognized Kevin and was astonished to see him alive, telling him that he had been dead when they treated him. The firefighters invited Kevin and his wife into the kitchen for coffee. There, the assistant chief, who had worked in the fire service for 45 years, said Kevin had been gone a minimum of 20 minutes. He asked what Kevin had experienced while his heart had stopped.
And I shut my eyes. And boom, there it was. It was like an IMAX theater. Literally, full-blown Technicolor 3D IMAX theater in my brain, and it’s still in my brain to this day. It’s like a loop that never goes away. Kevin began recalling what he had experienced while rescuers worked to revive him a week earlier. He described watching the scene from above. And I said, “Well, I’m on a pole. I’m above the whole scene. I can see all around. I see the mountain in the distance in the south. I see a red fire truck below with E256 on it. And I see another— I see a red ambulance, but it has M252 on it.” […] And they are looking at me as I’m describing where the trucks are and where the people are. Kevin also recalled seeing rescuers in blue gathered around a body below him. Recognizing his own shoes, he realized he was watching them work to revive him. Kevin then mentioned another detail he remembered seeing— one that startled the firefighters.
And then, I open my eyes, and I said, “And there’s a white envelope.” Like that. I held my fingers up. And the looks on their faces were like, “What?” Join us tomorrow for Part 2 of this three-part series, as the paramedic explains the white envelope and Kevin recalls the Light that surrounded him and the message from his late mother.
