Ayurveda originated in India more than 5,000 years ago, and is one of the oldest medical systems in our world. In Sanskrit, the word “Ayurveda” has two components, “ayur” meaning longevity and “veda” meaning science. In the beginning, this method was passed down through the generations by Indian physicians and sages through oral teaching. Later, this precious healing knowledge was recorded in books. The three key ancient texts that document Ayurvedic medicine practices are famously known as the “Great Trilogy,” namely the “Charaka Samhita,” “Sushruta Samhita” and “Astanga Hridaya.”
