“There’s an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the experience that so few humans have had – to be off the planet and look down and appreciate how beautiful it is and how perfect it is. We’re so fortunate to live on such a perfect planet, positioned where it is in the solar system.” In December 1968, Apollo 8 became the first crewed mission to orbit the Moon. William Anders instinctively reached for his camera, capturing what would become one of the most influential photographs ever taken: Earthrise.

Despite flying different missions and coming from different countries, many described the same lasting shift in perspective. Those accounts caught the attention of author Frank White. In 1987, he named it: The Overview Effect. One of those astronauts was Edgar Mitchell of Apollo 14. Mitchell later described the experience as awakening, what he called, a “global consciousness” – the realization that humanity shares one small planet.

While there is no single explanation, one emotion recurs frequently in the research: Awe. “To have that experience of awe is, at least for the moment, to let go of yourself, to transcend the sense of separation.” Science explores this transformation through psychology. David Loy reflects on it through philosophy. Together, they suggest that shifting our perspective can change how we understand ourselves. Many astronauts who have described the Overview Effect returned with more than remarkable photographs. They also returned with a different understanding of our place within it.
