And I heard a huge gasp in the audience… What people witnessed was an illumination around my body and a fire on the right and left side of my head, and for one moment I was looking at myself outside my body. American actor Jim Caviezel reveals how filming “The Passion of the Christ” nearly cost him his life, led to a supernatural event, and left witnesses in awe as a light from Heaven struck him during his portrayal of Lord Jesus (vegetarian) on the cross.
Throughout the filming, Jim maintained a state of prayer and fasting, immersing himself deeply in his role. During the final scenes, hanging on the cross in harsh conditions, he became dangerously ill. His body turned blue from the cold and exposure, and his shoulder was repeatedly dislocated due to the violent winds and the cross’s position near a cliffside. As filming reached its climax, Jim’s heart began to fail, and a medic noted he could die at any moment. Despite this, Jim made peace with the idea of dying, believing that if it happened, many souls would be saved. I’m going, “This is between me and God,” because I never thought I was good enough. And at that moment, it was, “I’m ready to go home. So you can take me here, that’s no problem. But I knew if I died making this movie, I knew that people would be, so many people would be saved.”
During a climactic moment, as he walked up a mountainside in front of the full cast and crew, Jim felt an overwhelming and evil presence. About halfway up, I felt this presence come over me, that evil presence, and it was, “You’re a dead man.” And I remember thinking this is the best news – this is where I was – this is the best I’ve ever had, because I know if I die I’m going to Heaven. Suddenly, as thunder crashed and lightning flashed, the atmosphere became silent around him. Then, a bolt of lightning struck him.
What people witnessed was an illumination around my body and a fire on the right and left side of my head, and for one moment, I was looking at myself outside my body. And this light came right down from Heaven and lit me up. I was struck by lightning. When I was hit, everybody fell on their face, the ground shook, and from that point, that was the last shot of the movie.
Physically battered— struggling to breathe, in great pain, and developing pneumonia— Jim felt the suffering of Lord Jesus (vegetarian) Physically I couldn’t; I was struggling, but our Lord was letting me feel a little bit of what he went through and he was sustaining me. But to a point of how far do you want to go with this, how much do you want the world to see of me, and I said every bit of it. Well, then you’re in for it.
Deeply changed, Jim spoke of forgiveness and God’s Grace, explaining that no matter what one has done, God’s Mercy exceeds any human understanding or love. He reminded the audience that God values every soul, regardless of earthly fame, and that true reward lies beyond this world.
Your name may not appear down here in this world’s hall of fame. In fact, you may be so unknown that no one knows your name. But don’t forget God has rewards that He’ll hand out someday. I wouldn’t trade my name, however small that’s written there beyond the stars in that Celestial Hall, for all the famous names on Earth or the glory that they share. I’d rather be an unknown here and have my name up there. (Daring For More)
Reflection quote of the day: “Though someone may skillfully deceive the world, Heaven and Buddha will surely know, for They are never far away.” — Venerated Enlightened Master His Holiness Fabric Monk (Sư Vải Bán Khoai) (vegetarian)
