Promised Land Animal Sanctuary in Campbellford, Canada is a loving haven for more than 100 animal-people. “So, the mission of the sanctuary is to open the hearts of the people that visit here and see every being as a unique individual, and not just something that is food or that serves some kind of purpose for us.” As an enthusiastic vegan, Kat Krylov is aware of the impact that our dietary choices have on the world. “There’s a statistic that if we killed people at the rate that we kill animals, the whole human race would be extinct in 10 days. Just thinking about that is insane. There’s 8 billion people on the planet, right? We would go extinct in 10 (days). That’s how much we kill animals and how many animals we eat mindlessly, without thinking about it, whatever that hamburger… you probably don’t even remember what you had for breakfast yesterday, but that was an animal’s life.”

“Having people stay here and offering equine therapy sessions, where people who are experiencing mental, emotional, physical difficulties, just being in the presence of horses is just so incredibly healing. We don’t have a riding program. I’m in awe of the profound healing effects that horses have on people.” Kat recalls the story of a friend who was experiencing a type of mental breakdown. “I don’t know how they know that the people need them, or which person needs which horse, but it always happens that a horse will come up, and I feel like it’s not even up to me anymore.” “Be kind. You can choose your attitude. And if you can be anything at all in this world, I think we come in here to learn how to love.”
