Scientists use the term “habitat fragmentation” to describe the problem of roads, rail lines, power lines, pipelines and other infrastructure, segmenting a formerly open wildlife habitat. The Netherlands is one of the world leaders in creating passageways called “wildlife crossings” or “ecoducts” to assist animals to safely cross highways, railway lines, and other areas where they may be in danger of accidently getting hit by moving vehicles.
