The WHO recently named alcohol, ultra-processed food, fossil fuel, and tobacco industries as being responsible for 2.7 million fatalities annually. The organization noted that industry consolidation has led to a small number of multinationals being able to wield outsized power over political systems and laws. Their actions, such as lobbying, the targeting of vulnerable people through advertising, and the spreading of false information are hampering efforts to improve public health. The WHO is urging countries to respond by creating stronger regulations on marketing, lobbying, and monopolistic practices, and by encouraging companies to focus on people before profits.

Thank you, World Health Organization, for helping to identify the major factors damaging public health and endangering the lives of millions. In Heaven’s mercy, may world governments implement policies to protect their people, thus ensuring a healthy future for everyone.
