After a few years of indoor or pot gardening, you’ll be needing to assess soil health. Here is a good tip on how to tell when potting soil should be replaced. Examine the plants currently in your pots. Do they look healthy, and are they still growing? If they show signs of yellowing, wilting, or fading leaves despite proper watering and light conditions, depleted and compacted soil may be the problem. Inspect the roots and soil. Roots growing through drainage holes or circling the bottom of the pot may indicate that the plant has outgrown its container. Soil that feels hard or compacted can be an issue as well since it can restrict airflow and prevent water and nutrients from reaching the roots. The condition of the container can also offer clues. White, crusty deposits on the pot may be due to a buildup of fertilizer salts. Excess salt can stress plants and disrupt nutrient balance. Additional signs include water running straight through the pot, soil pulling away from the edges, and a noticeable decline in plant growth. For most large outdoor planters filled entirely with potting soil, replacing the soil every two years is generally sufficient. By replacing potting soil, it helps replenish nutrients, improve soil structure, and promote healthier plant growth.
